Dynamic analysis of arch dams considering fluid-structure interaction

The social, economic, and environmental consequences of the failure an arch dam make it essential to evaluate its dynamic response mitigate risk a disaster. Since slenderness flexibility these dams tend increase fluid-structure interaction during earthquake, this work compares hypothetical in Marañón river, northern Perú, for both full empty-reservoir conditions. Three formulations were used estimate hydrodynamic pressures: Westergaard’s added mass, Eulerian Lagrangian. comparisons performed earthquakes distinct seismogenic sources, previously matched uniform hazard spectrum with return period 10000 years. finite element method was derive seismic demands dam-reservoir-foundation system COMSOL Multiphysics software, carrying out time-history analyses assuming linear elastic behavior foundation domains massless approach, ignoring effect waves propagation but considering stiffness. results show that Lagrangian produce similar demands, while mass formulation is conservative. full-reservoir condition generally increases will depend on boundary conditions assumed fluid characteristics among other factors. Earthquakes same do not necessarily equal responses.
